What’s Ashura’s history?
Karbala Battle
In Muharram 61 AH, Iraq’s Battle of Karbala was a major event.
The Umayyad Caliph Yazid ibn Muawiyah despatched a vast army to fight Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH), and his family and friends.
The conflict occurred because Imam Hussain (AS) refused to declare allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiyah, who had taken over Muslim leadership after his father’s death.
The enemy camp mercilessly killed Imam Hussain (AS) on Ashura, the 10th Muharram. Imam Hussain (AS) and 72 other martyrs, mostly male family members of the Prophet (PBUH), died to defend Islam and fight oppression on this day.
Allah freed Musa
Allah delivered Prophet Musa (AS) and Bani Israel from Pharaoh and his troops on Ashura.
As God, the Pharaoh was ruthless and wicked and disseminated blasphemy. Musa (AS) advised Pharaoh to worship Allah instead of following him. Pharaoh refused to acknowledge a higher power and ordered a massive army to kill the Prophet and his followers.
The army chased Prophet Musa (AS) and his people on Ashura, but they trusted Allah alone.
The Holy Quran revealed Prophet Musa (AS)’s renowned Dua:
“My Lord will lead me.” Quran 26:62
Allah separated the Red Sea for Prophet Musa (AS) and his people because of his patience and confidence in Allah. Pharaoh and his army were sunk as punishment.
